Ring Size Calculator

Every ring sizing system reduces to one physical quantity: the inner circumference of the band in millimeters, or equivalently its inner diameter, since circumference equals diameter times pi. The US numeric scale is linear in that quantity, with each whole size adding about 2.55 mm of circumference, equal to 0.032 inches or 0.813 mm of diameter, and a nominal size 0 near 37 mm. Inverting that relation gives US size = (circumference - 36.5) / 2.55. Common adult results fall between US 4 and US 9 for women, roughly 46.8 to 59.1 mm, and US 8 to US 13 for men, roughly 57.2 to 70 mm. The UK and Australian trade uses a letter scale over the same physical range, and most of continental Europe prints the circumference in millimeters directly, so an EU 54 is a 54 mm ring. The measurement has real caveats. The knuckle is usually wider than the base of the finger, so a band must pass the joint yet not spin at rest, and a paper strip pulled tight reads small while one laid loosely reads large. Fingers change by half a size or more between a cold morning and a hot evening, and swell with salt intake, exercise, pregnancy and some medications. Wide bands above about 6 mm sit on more skin and generally need a quarter to half size more, while comfort-fit bands with a domed interior often need slightly less.

Before standardised sizes, rings were bespoke. A goldsmith fitted a customer against a tapered steel mandrel, a graduated cone on which a ring settles at a repeatable position, and against a set of graduated ring gauges on a keyring. Both tools are still on every jeweller's bench and remain the reference against which printed and paper sizers are checked; the mandrel is the reason ring size has always been treated as a length measurement rather than a subjective judgement. The pressure for a shared numeric scale came from distance selling. As jewellery moved into catalogues and department stores in the later nineteenth century, a customer and a maker who never met needed a common vocabulary, and national trades settled on their own conventions: a numeric scale in the United States built on fixed increments of thirty-two thousandths of an inch in diameter, and an alphabetical scale in Britain and its trading partners. Neither converts cleanly to the other by name, only through the underlying millimeter value. International standardisation eventually took the obvious route, with ISO 8653 defining ring size by inner circumference in millimeters, the same convention the continental European numbers already used and the value this calculator treats as primary.
