Glove sizing rests on two hand measurements: the circumference around the palm at the knuckles excluding the thumb, and the length from the tip of the middle finger to the base of the palm. The governing number is whichever is larger, expressed in inches, and it maps directly onto the traditional numeric glove size, so a 9 inch hand takes a size 9. Letter sizes are bands on that scale and are gender specific because the underlying distributions differ: a men's medium spans roughly 7.5 to 8.5 inches while a women's medium spans about 6.5 to 7.0 inches, which means a men's medium sits close to a women's extra large. Continental sizes restate the same circumference in centimeters, so 9 inches becomes about 23. Fit tolerance depends on material and purpose rather than on the number alone. Vegetable tanned leather stretches roughly a quarter to half a size in wear, so dress gloves are bought snug; knitted and elastane blends accommodate a wider range; nylon and coated synthetics hold their original dimension. Work gloves are usually taken slightly loose for extended wear, winter gloves need a small air gap for the insulation to function, and touchscreen compatible gloves need a close fingertip fit to register at all. The main caveat is inconsistency between makers. Even disposable examination gloves, which fall under ASTM D3578 with defined palm width tolerances, vary noticeably between manufacturers, and no comparable dimensional standard binds fashion or work gloves.

Glove making was a measured craft long before ready to wear clothing was, because a glove that does not fit is unusable. The decisive innovation is credited to Xavier Jouvin, a glover of Grenoble, who in 1834 patented a cutting die known as the main de fer, or iron hand. Jouvin had studied large numbers of hands and concluded that they varied in a small number of repeatable proportions. He divided them into a set of sizes crossed with width fittings and cut steel dies for each, so identical parts could be stamped out rather than cut freehand, making consistent sizing possible for the first time. Grenoble became the European centre of the glove trade on the strength of that system, and Jouvin's size numbers, based on hand circumference measured in the old French inch or pouce of about 2.7 centimeters, spread through the industry. That is why French glove numbering still sits near circumference in centimeters divided by three, while English speaking markets kept the circumference in inches directly as the size. Twentieth century developments were regulatory rather than dimensional: examination and surgical gloves acquired ASTM specifications such as D3578 for rubber examination gloves, and occupational hand protection came under workplace rules including the US OSHA hand protection requirements and European protective glove standards. All of these specify performance and marking, but leave everyday letter sizing to individual makers.
