Rising Sign (Ascendant) Calculator by Birth Time

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the ecliptic degree crossing the eastern horizon at the birth moment. It is a spherical-trigonometry result rather than a planetary position, computed from Local Sidereal Time, the obliquity of the ecliptic at 23.4393 degrees, and the geographic latitude of birth, using the arctangent formula above. Because the Earth turns once on its axis in a sidereal day of 23 hours 56 minutes 4 seconds, the entire 360-degree zodiac rises within that span and the Ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes. The familiar rule that a new sign rises every two hours holds only at the equator. At higher latitudes the ecliptic meets the horizon at a steeply varying angle, producing what are called signs of long and short ascension: at 40 degrees north, Pisces and Aries can rise in well under an hour while Cancer and Leo take nearly three, which skews the natural distribution of rising signs across a population. Above the polar circles, parts of the ecliptic never rise at all and most house systems break down entirely. The main limitation of this implementation is its sidereal-time input, approximated from day of year and clock time with no longitude or time zone field, so an error of an hour or more is possible, which is easily enough to change the reported sign.

The Ascendant is not one feature of horoscopic astrology among many; it is the feature that defines it. The Greek term horoskopos means hour-marker, the degree that marks the moment, and it is the root of the English word horoscope. Charts organised around a rising degree and a system of houses appear in Hellenistic Egypt in roughly the second to first century BCE, and the earliest surviving Greek horoscopes date from the first century BCE. Before that, Babylonian celestial divination concerned omens for the king and the state rather than individual nativities, and had no need of a rising degree at all. Computing the Ascendant required tables of rising times, and these have a long technical lineage: Babylonian arithmetic schemes for the rising of zodiacal arcs, then rigorous spherical-trigonometric treatment in Ptolemy's Almagest in the second century CE, and later refinements by Islamic astronomers who developed much of the trigonometry the calculation depends on. Dividing the space between the angles into houses proved far more contentious, generating the Porphyry, Alcabitius, Campanus, Regiomontanus and Placidus systems over some fifteen centuries of disagreement. The Ascendant itself, unlike the intermediate house cusps, is defined identically in nearly all of them, which is why it remains the least disputed calculated point in a chart.
