Mars Sign Calculator

The Mars sign is the zodiac sector containing the geocentric ecliptic longitude of Mars at birth. Mars completes a sidereal orbit in 686.98 days, giving a mean motion near 0.524 degrees per day, so it normally spends about six to seven weeks in each 30-degree sign. That residence stretches dramatically around retrograde periods, which recur every 25.6 months on average and last roughly 58 to 82 days. When a retrograde loop falls inside a single sign, Mars can occupy it for six months or more. The calculator also reports the decan, a 10-degree subdivision, and the traditional essential dignity: Mars is in domicile in Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Taurus and Libra, and in fall in Cancer. The accuracy caveat is unusually large for this particular planet. The model advances a mean longitude linearly and ignores orbital eccentricity, and Mars has an eccentricity of 0.0934, the highest of any major planet other than Mercury. The resulting equation of the center can reach about 10.7 degrees, more than a third of a sign, so a computed position may fall in a sign adjacent to the true one. Near a sign ingress or a retrograde station, a proper ephemeris is required rather than this approximation.

Mars has an outsized place in the history of astronomy precisely because its orbit is so eccentric. Babylonian scribes recorded its stations and oppositions in the first millennium BCE, and the epicyclic model in Ptolemy's Almagest fitted it only imperfectly. When Johannes Kepler inherited Tycho Brahe's Mars observations at Prague and spent years failing to reconcile them with circular motion, a residual error of a few arcminutes forced the conclusion published in Astronomia Nova in 1609: the orbit is an ellipse with the Sun at one focus. The first two laws of planetary motion came out of the Mars data specifically. Astrologically, Mars was one of the two malefics in Hellenistic doctrine, associated with war, iron, surgery and violence, an inheritance from the Babylonian identification of the planet with Nergal and from the Greco-Roman war god. The modern reading of Mars as personal drive, assertion and sexual desire is a twentieth-century psychological reframing, developed by writers such as Dane Rudhyar in The Astrology of Personality in 1936 and expanded by later psychological astrologers. Mars also produced astrology's most argued-over empirical claim: the French researcher Michel Gauquelin reported in 1955 a statistical excess of sports champions born with Mars in particular sectors of the sky, a result that drew decades of replication attempts and methodological dispute without gaining scientific acceptance.
