Zodiac Sign Calculator

A sun sign is the 30 degree segment of the tropical zodiac occupied by the Sun at birth. The tropical zodiac is anchored to the vernal equinox, so 0 degrees of Aries is defined as the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north, around March 20, and the twelve signs follow in equal 30 degree steps. The Sun advances along the ecliptic at an average of 0.9856 degrees per day, giving roughly 30.4 days per sign, but the rate is not constant: Earth reaches perihelion in early January and moves fastest then, so the Sun crosses Capricorn and Aquarius in about 29.5 days while Cancer takes about 31.5. Boundary dates therefore drift by up to a day across the four-year leap cycle, which is why a birthday on the 19th through 23rd of a month can fall in either sign depending on the year and the hour. The signs are not the constellations. Precession of the equinoxes shifts the equinox point westward by about 50.3 arcseconds a year, roughly one degree every 72 years, and the tropical signs have drifted around 24 degrees from the star patterns they were named after. Under the constellation boundaries the International Astronomical Union adopted in 1930, the ecliptic actually passes through 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus, which the Sun crosses for roughly 18 days in late November and early December. Indian sidereal astrology tracks the stars instead and returns a sign that differs from the Western tropical result by about one sign for most birthdays. The personality and compatibility claims attached to sun signs have been tested repeatedly and not supported.

The twelve equal sign zodiac is Babylonian. Earlier Mesopotamian star lists such as MUL.APIN describe a path of the Moon marked by constellations of unequal size; the reform into twelve exactly equal 30 degree segments is attested in cuneiform astronomical texts by roughly the fifth century BCE, and it was adopted as a computational convenience for predicting positions rather than as a description of the sky. Hipparchus discovered precession around 127 BCE by comparing his own star positions against older records, which forced the Greek tradition to choose between the equinox and the fixed stars as its anchor. Greek astrologers working in Egypt chose the equinox, and Ptolemy defended that choice in the second century CE Tetrabiblos, fixing the tropical zodiac that Western astrology still uses, while Indian astronomy retained the sidereal frame. The notion of a personal sun sign standing in for a person's whole astrology is far more recent. Individual horoscopes had always required a full chart until newspapers found a mass-market shortcut: R. H. Naylor's astrological feature in the British Sunday Express, beginning in August 1930 with a piece occasioned by the birth of Princess Margaret, developed into a column organized by birth date range, and the format spread through the English-language press over the following decade. The twelve-paragraph horoscope column, and with it the idea that a birth date alone identifies a sign, dates from that commercial innovation rather than from the classical tradition.
