The Ascendant is the point where the ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon at that moment and place; it marks the first house cusp and anchors the entire structure. Because Earth turns once per sidereal day, local sidereal time advances 360.9856 degrees per 24 hours of clock time, about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time uncertain by half an hour moves the Ascendant by roughly seven degrees and a two-hour error can change the rising sign outright. The Midheaven is a separate point where the local meridian meets the ecliptic, and it sits 90 degrees from the Ascendant only in special cases; elsewhere the angle between them varies with latitude and with the 23.44 degree tilt of the ecliptic. House systems differ in how they fill the ten cusps between those two angles. Equal house simply steps 30 degrees at a time from the Ascendant and works at any latitude. House division is one of the oldest technical components of horoscopic astrology, appearing with the Greek tradition that took shape in Egypt around the first century BCE. The original method was whole sign houses: the sign containing the Ascendant became the entire first house, the next sign the second, and so on, so that cusps and sign boundaries coincided and no trigonometry was needed.
