The cent, also commonly called a penny, is the smallest denomination of US currency currently in circulation. To convert cents to dollars, divide by 100. To convert dollars to cents, multiply by 100. How does the coin breakdown decide which coins to use?
It applies the greedy change-making rule: take as many quarters as will fit, then dimes from the remainder, then nickels, and let whatever is left be pennies. For 87 cents that gives 3 quarters, 1 dime, no nickels and 2 pennies, six coins in total. With the US denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 the greedy result always happens to be the smallest possible number of coins, but that is a property of this particular set. For a hypothetical set of 1, 3 and 4, greedy makes 6 as 4+1+1 while 3+3 does it in two coins.
Why do payment APIs require amounts in cents rather than dollars?
Binary floating point cannot represent most decimal fractions exactly, so 0.1 plus 0.2 evaluates to 0.30000000000000004 rather than 0.3. Accumulate a few thousand of those errors across an order and the ledger no longer balances. Storing the amount as an integer number of minor units, 4999 instead of 49.99, makes addition, comparison and multiplication exact, which is why processors accept charges in cents. Convert to dollars only when formatting a value for display, and never do arithmetic on the formatted string.
What is a mill, and where do amounts smaller than a cent appear?
A mill is one tenth of a cent, or 0.001 dollars, and it survives wherever prices are quoted per unit rather than per transaction. Fuel is priced with the familiar nine tenths on the end, so 3.499 dollars per gallon is 349.9 cents. Electricity tariffs are often published in mills per kilowatt-hour, and property taxes use millage rates expressed as mills per dollar of assessed value. Sub-cent pricing is legal because the total is only rounded to a whole cent once the quantity has been multiplied in.
How should I round an amount that falls between two cents?
Decide on a rule and apply it once, at the end. Round half up, the everyday convention, pushes 2.345 dollars to 2.35, but it biases a long series of totals slightly upward. Round half to even, sometimes called banker's rounding, sends halves to the nearest even cent so the bias cancels over many transactions. The bigger trap is rounding twice: rounding tax on each line item and then summing can differ by a cent or two from taxing the order subtotal, which is why invoices state which basis they use.
Which package size is cheaper when prices are compared in cents per ounce?
Put both packages on the same denominator by converting the price to cents and dividing by the quantity. A 12 ounce jar at 3.49 dollars is 349 / 12 = 29.08 cents per ounce, while a 20 ounce jar at 5.29 dollars is 529 / 20 = 26.45 cents per ounce, so the larger jar is about 2.6 cents per ounce cheaper. Working in whole cents keeps the arithmetic clean and avoids the misleading precision of a dollar figure carried to four decimal places on a shelf label.
Why do some countries round cash totals to the nearest five cents?
When a one-cent coin costs more to mint and handle than it is worth, the mint withdraws it and retailers adopt cash rounding, often called Swedish rounding: a cash total ending in 1 or 2 cents rounds down, one ending in 3 or 4 rounds up to 5, and so on to the nearest multiple of five. Canada retired its one-cent coin on exactly this reasoning. Crucially the rounding applies only to the cash tender, so card and electronic payments still settle at the exact cent shown on the receipt.
