Why do euro coins follow a 1-2-5 pattern?
The eight denominations are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 cents, which is the 1-2-5 series repeated once per decade. That pattern is a deliberate compromise: it keeps the number of distinct coins a cashier must recognise small, while still letting any amount be made with few pieces, because within each decade you can reach every step of 10 using at most one 5 and two 2s or 1s. Why do payment systems handle euro amounts as integer cents?
The euro has a minor unit exponent of two, meaning one euro is 100 cents, and payment processors take charges in whole cents precisely because binary floating point cannot store most decimal fractions exactly. Sending 2550 instead of 25.50 keeps addition, tax calculation and reconciliation exact, and it removes any ambiguity about the decimal separator between locales. How do I convert euro cents into another currency correctly?
Do it in three ordered steps: divide the cents by 100 to get euros, apply the exchange rate to get the target currency, then multiply by that currency's minor unit factor and round once. The factor is not always 100, since the Japanese yen has no circulating subdivision and a few currencies use thousandths. What is the cleanest way to split a euro bill so the cents balance?
Work entirely in cents. Convert the total to cents, divide by the number of people using integer division, then hand out the remainder one cent at a time. A 47.35 euro bill is 4,735 cents; divided among three people that is 1,578 cents each with a remainder of 1, so two people pay 15.78 euros and one pays 15.79 euros, summing back to exactly 47.35. Splitting in decimal euros and rounding each share independently is what leaves a total that is a cent short or a cent over.
