Sock sizing is graded on one dimension only: foot length from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Width is left to the knit. A ribbed cotton or wool blend with elastane in the welt stretches 20 to 40 percent before the loops distort, so a single size can serve a two centimetre band of foot lengths without the heel pocket drifting out of place. The men's bands used here are under 23.5 cm for small, 23.5 to 25.5 cm for medium, 25.5 to 27.5 cm for large and 27.5 to 29.5 cm for extra large, with women's bands running about 1.5 cm shorter at each step. Estimating from shoe size is lossy. Lasts add 10 to 15 mm of toe spring and taper beyond the foot itself, and that allowance varies by brand and category, so a US 10 running shoe and a US 10 dress shoe do not imply the same foot. Tracing the foot while standing, late in the day when it has swelled, is the only method worth trusting to the half centimetre. Two further caveats matter: untreated cotton can shrink 3 to 5 percent on a hot wash, pushing a borderline sock a full size down, and graduated compression socks are not sized this way at all. They are fitted from ankle and calf circumference against a pressure specification, commonly 15 to 20 or 20 to 30 mmHg at the ankle, because the therapeutic effect depends on circumference rather than length.

Socks were hand knitted long before they were sized. The decisive change came in 1589, when William Lee of Calverton in Nottinghamshire built the stocking frame, a machine that formed a whole course of loops at once and made knitted hose a manufactured product rather than a domestic craft. Volume production created the need for a repeatable grading system. Traditional hosiery sizes were simply the length of the knitted foot of the sock measured in inches, so a size 10 sock had a ten inch foot and sizes were graded in half inch steps from roughly 9 to 13. That convention survives on many packages today, which is why hosiery numbers and shoe numbers have never quite matched. Circular knitting machines in the nineteenth century added the shaped heel and toe, and the arrival of nylon, developed at DuPont under Wallace Carothers and introduced commercially in stockings in 1940, brought the elasticity that let one size span a range of feet. Later blends with elastane widened that span further and pushed manufacturers toward the small, medium and large labels now common. Alongside this, footwear metrology moved to Mondopoint, standardised internationally as ISO 9407, which specifies sizes directly as foot length in millimetres with foot width as a secondary parameter. Mondopoint is used for military and safety footwear in many countries and is the reason centimetre measurements remain the only unambiguous way to compare hosiery across US, UK and European labels.
