What is Ohm's law?
Ohm's law states V = I × R. Voltage (V) equals current (I) times resistance (R). Combined with P = V × I, you can find any electrical quantity from two knowns.
What is the practical use of the power formulas P = I²R and P = V²/R?
P = I²R (power equals current squared times resistance) is used to calculate heat dissipation in a resistor or wire — critical for selecting resistor wattage ratings and wire gauge. P = V²/R is useful when voltage is known but current is not directly measured. Both are derived from combining Ohm's law (V = IR) with P = VI.
What is the difference between AC and DC circuits in terms of Ohm's law?
For DC (direct current) circuits, Ohm's law applies directly: V = IR. For AC (alternating current), resistance is replaced by impedance (Z), which combines resistance and reactance from capacitors and inductors. The formula becomes V = IZ.
