Ewe gestation averages about 147 days, roughly five months, with a documented species range of 142 to 152 days. Breed accounts for most of the spread: fine-wool Merinos sit near 150 days, hill breeds such as Cheviot and Romney near 148, and early-maturing meat breeds such as Dorset, Texel, and Katahdin near 145 to 146. Fetal number shifts the date as well, because parturition in sheep is initiated by the fetal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis rather than the ewe, so a uterus carrying two or three lambs reaches the cortisol threshold earlier. Twins typically arrive about two days early and triplets three to five days early, which is why the calculator subtracts a fixed offset for each. The practical value of the date is that it fixes the late-gestation management window. About 70 percent of fetal growth occurs in the final six weeks, so ewe energy demand rises roughly 50 to 75 percent for twins and 80 to 100 percent for triplets over maintenance. Underfeeding in that window causes pregnancy toxaemia, also called twin lamb disease, a ketotic collapse with high case fatality once the ewe is recumbent. Clostridial and pasteurella boosters are conventionally given about six weeks out so that antibody titres peak in colostrum. The main caveat is the input itself: unless the ewe was hand-mated or the ram carried a raddle harness with dated crayon changes, the service date is inferred rather than observed, and an error there moves every downstream date with it.
