Alpacas are induced ovulators: the female has no fixed cycle and releases an egg roughly 26 hours after mating, so a recorded breeding date and the true conception date usually agree closely, yet the length of the pregnancy that follows still varies by five weeks between individuals. In camelids the embryo migrates and implants almost exclusively in the left uterine horn, and early embryonic loss in the first 60 days is common enough that a confirmed pregnancy at day 30 is not a guaranteed cria. Practical management hangs on the final third. Roughly two thirds of fetal growth occurs after day 230, so nutrition is held at maintenance on grass hay for most of the pregnancy, since overconditioned dams have more birthing trouble, then lifted late with a modest pelleted supplement near 14 to 16 percent protein. The alpaca, Vicugna pacos, was domesticated on the Andean altiplano of Peru and Bolivia several thousand years ago and was bred principally for fibre rather than as a pack animal. Genetic work published in 2001 reassigned its ancestry to the wild vicuna rather than the guanaco, which is why the species name was changed from Lama pacos to Vicugna pacos. Andean herders maintained sophisticated selection for fleece quality for millennia, but the Spanish conquest after 1532 devastated the herds and the surviving animals were pushed to high, marginal ground, where much of the ancient fibre-quality breeding was lost. Organised recording of breeding and birth dates outside South America is recent. Alpacas were essentially unknown as farm stock in North America until commercial imports began in the mid-1980s, drawn mostly from Chile and later Peru and Bolivia. A dedicated North American registry with DNA-verified parentage followed in the late 1980s, and it was closed to further imports at the end of the 1990s, creating a genetically defined national herd whose breeding records are tightly documented. That registry data, along with clinical camelid research at veterinary schools including UC Davis and Oregon State, is what produced the modern 335 to 370 day figures. Earlier estimates were largely anecdotal, and the routine use of transrectal ultrasound for early confirmation only became standard practice for camelid breeders in the same period.
