Formula: Due Date = Breeding Date + Gestation Period (28-35 days)
Worked example โ Expected due: April 1 | Nest box by: March 29 | ~5 kits expected
Formula
Due Date = Breeding Date + Gestation Period (28-35 days)
Gestation length varies by breed: dwarf breeds average 30 days, standard breeds 31 days, and giant breeds 32 days. The calculator provides earliest, expected, and latest due dates based on breed-specific ranges.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Standard Breed Doe Bred on March 1st
Problem:A Holland Lop doe was bred on March 1st. Calculate due dates and key milestones.
Solution:Breed: Mini Lop / Holland Lop (28-34 day range, avg 31) Earliest due: March 1 + 28 = March 29 Expected due: March 1 + 31 = April 1 Latest due: March 1 + 34 = April 4 Palpation check: March 1 + 12 = March 13 Nest box: April 1 - 3 = March 29 Expected litter size: ~5 kits
Result:Expected due: April 1 | Nest box by: March 29 | ~5 kits expected
Example 2: Flemish Giant Breeding
Problem:A Flemish Giant doe was bred on January 15th. Determine kindling window and weaning date.
Solution:Breed: Giant (30-35 day range, avg 32) Earliest due: Jan 15 + 30 = February 14 Expected due: Jan 15 + 32 = February 16 Latest due: Jan 15 + 35 = February 19 Weaning date: Feb 16 + 42 = March 30 Expected litter size: ~8 kits
Result:Expected due: February 16 | Weaning: March 30 | ~8 kits expected
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a rabbit pregnant?
Rabbit gestation typically lasts between 28 and 35 days, with an average of 31 days for most breeds. The exact duration depends on the breed, litter size, the individual doe, and environmental conditions. Smaller breeds like Netherland Dwarfs tend to have slightly shorter gestations around 28 to 33 days, while giant breeds like Flemish Giants may carry for 30 to 35 days. First-time does sometimes deliver a day or two later than experienced mothers. If a doe has not kindled (given birth) by day 35, veterinary consultation is recommended as this may indicate a false pregnancy, resorption of the litter, or complications requiring medical intervention.
How can you tell if a rabbit is pregnant?
Several methods can confirm rabbit pregnancy. Abdominal palpation by an experienced handler can detect grape-sized embryos at 10 to 14 days post-breeding. By day 14-18, the embryos feel like small marbles. Weight gain becomes noticeable after the second week, with the doe gaining 10 to 15 percent of her body weight during pregnancy. Behavioral changes include increased nesting behavior, hay gathering, territorial aggression, and reduced appetite in the first week followed by increased food consumption. Around days 27-30, the doe will pull fur from her dewlap and belly to line the nest. Some breeders use the fall-off method, re-introducing the doe to the buck at day 14, as pregnant does typically refuse mating aggressively.
What is a nest box and when should it be provided?
A nest box is an enclosed container placed in the doe cage approximately 3 days before the expected kindling date to give her a safe, warm place to build her nest and deliver her kits. The box should be slightly larger than the doe, lined with soft hay or straw as bedding material. The doe will add her own pulled fur for insulation. The box sides should be high enough to prevent newborn kits from crawling out but low enough for the doe to easily enter and exit. For indoor rabbits, a wooden or plastic box works well. The nest box should be kept clean and dry, and the bedding changed if soiled, while minimizing disturbance to the doe during the final days of gestation.
How many babies do rabbits typically have per litter?
Litter sizes vary significantly by breed and individual rabbit. Dwarf breeds typically produce 2 to 4 kits per litter, medium breeds average 5 to 8 kits, and giant breeds can have 8 to 14 kits or more. First-time does generally have smaller litters than experienced mothers. The average across all breeds is approximately 6 kits per litter. Very large litters (over 10) may require supplemental feeding or fostering excess kits to another nursing doe, as the mother may not produce enough milk for all of them. Rabbits can breed again almost immediately after giving birth, which is why responsible breeders carefully manage breeding schedules to protect the doe health.
What should you feed a pregnant rabbit?
Pregnant does require increased nutrition, especially during the latter half of gestation. For the first two weeks, maintain the normal diet of unlimited timothy hay, measured pellets (about 1/4 cup per 5 pounds of body weight), and fresh leafy greens. From day 14 onward, gradually increase pellet rations by 50 to 100 percent to support fetal growth. Alfalfa hay can replace timothy hay during late pregnancy and lactation due to its higher protein and calcium content. Fresh water must be available at all times, as dehydration can cause serious complications. Avoid sudden diet changes, which can cause gastrointestinal stress. After kindling, the nursing doe needs even more food, roughly 2 to 3 times her normal ration.
