Rabbit gestation is unusually short for a mammal of its size, averaging 31 days and normally falling between 28 and 35 days. The doe is an induced ovulator: she has no true estrous cycle, and ovulation occurs roughly 10 to 13 hours after mating, which is why the breeding date is a firm anchor for a due date rather than a rough estimate as it is in species bred on a cycle. Embryos implant in the uterine wall around day 7, and by days 10 to 14 an experienced handler can palpate them through the abdominal wall as firm swellings about the size of a grape. Because the window is so tight, the calculation is a plain date offset: earliest due is breeding plus the breed minimum, expected due is breeding plus the average, latest is breeding plus the maximum. Breed averages differ only modestly, with dwarf lines near 30 days, standard breeds near 31, and giant breeds near 32. Litter size interacts with length. Large litters tend to arrive a day early, while a doe carrying only one or two kits may go long or fail to trigger labor at all. Most practitioners treat day 35 as the action threshold, beyond which retained kits, whole-litter resorption, or pseudopregnancy should be investigated. Pseudopregnancy, triggered by sterile mating or by does mounting one another, lasts roughly 16 to 18 days and produces nest building and fur pulling with no kits at the end of it. The domestic rabbit descends from the European wild rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, native to Iberia and North Africa. Romans kept them in walled enclosures called leporaria, and controlled captive breeding is generally traced to French and Spanish monastic warrens in the early medieval period, where the short gestation and the ability to conceive again almost immediately after kindling made rabbits an attractive year-round meat source. Systematic breed development came much later, through the fancy rabbit clubs of nineteenth-century Britain and the written standards issued by the British Rabbit Council and the American Rabbit Breeders Association in the early twentieth century. Reflex ovulation in the rabbit was characterized by reproductive physiologists in the early twentieth century, and the finding was put to famous practical use in 1931, when Maurice Friedman at the University of Pennsylvania developed the rabbit test for human pregnancy: a urine sample was injected into a doe, whose ovaries were examined about 48 hours later for the ovulation response provoked by chorionic gonadotropin. That assay stayed in clinical use until immunological tests displaced it in the 1960s, and it made rabbit reproductive timing one of the most heavily documented in mammalian biology. Modern veterinary and extension references simply codify those measurements into the 28 to 35 day window in use today.
