One avoirdupois pound equals exactly 453.59237 grams by international agreement. One pound contains 16 ounces, and one ounce equals 28.349523125 grams. The calculator converts any input unit to grams first, then derives all other units from that base value. The pounds-and-ounces display separates the decimal into whole pounds and remaining ounces.

Example 1: Baby Weight Conversion
Problem:Convert a baby weight of 3,400 grams to pounds and ounces.
Solution:Pounds = 3400 / 453.592 = 7.4957 lb\nWhole pounds = 7\nRemaining ounces = 0.4957 x 16 = 7.93 oz\nSo 3,400 g = 7 lb 7.93 oz\nAlso: 3.4 kg = 0.535 stone
Result:3,400 g = 7 lb 7.93 oz (7.496 lb)
Example 2: Shipping Package Weight
Problem:A package weighs 2.3 kg. Convert to pounds.
Solution:Grams = 2.3 x 1000 = 2,300 g\nPounds = 2300 / 453.592 = 5.0706 lb\n= 5 lb 1.13 oz\nOunces = 2300 / 28.3495 = 81.13 oz
Result:2,300 g = 5.07 lb = 5 lb 1.13 oz
