Why does this converter list carats and grains next to the metric units?
Both are defined exactly in metric terms, so they slot into the same table. The metric carat used for gemstones is exactly 200 milligrams, meaning one decagram is 50 carats. The grain, still used for propellant charges and some pharmaceutical legacy figures, is exactly 64.79891 milligrams, so a decagram is about 154.32 grains. Because these definitions are exact rather than measured, the only error in converting them is rounding.
Is a decagram a measure of mass or of weight?
Strictly it measures mass, the amount of matter, which does not change with location. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass and is properly expressed in newtons.
