This tool is a lookup, not a computation. The chart is a fixed grid of 28 rows for maternal ages 18 to 45 and 12 columns for months of conception, and each of the 336 cells holds a preset answer of boy or girl. Nothing in the inputs is causally connected to fetal sex, which is set at fertilisation by whether the sperm carries an X or a Y chromosome and is unaffected by the mother's age or the season. Two conventions matter for using the grid as intended. Age is Chinese sui age, which counts a person as 1 at birth and adds a year at each lunar new year, so it runs roughly one to two years ahead of Western age. The month is a lunar month, and because Chinese new year falls between about 21 January and 20 February, a January or early February conception often belongs to the previous lunar year. This calculator approximates sui age as Western age plus one, which is right for most of the year but not all of it. The accuracy question has been tested against large birth registries rather than anecdote. Population-based analyses using several million recorded births have found the chart correct close to half the time, which is what an arbitrary binary rule should produce given a natural sex ratio near 105 boys per 100 girls. Any single chart will also look impressive to individual users, since a coin flip is right half the time and successes are remembered more readily than misses. Treat the output as folklore. Clinical answers come from cell-free fetal DNA testing from about 9 to 10 weeks, from chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis, or from the anatomy ultrasound at roughly 18 to 22 weeks.

The chart is usually introduced with a story about a scroll recovered from a royal tomb near Beijing some 700 years ago and kept afterwards at the Beijing Institute of Science. No manuscript, excavation report or archival record has ever been produced to support that account, and the tale appears to have spread mainly through twentieth-century popular publishing rather than through any documented Chinese medical or divinatory text. Its two ingredients, however, are genuinely old and well recorded. The Chinese lunisolar calendar, refined across successive dynasties and used for civil purposes until the Republic adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1912, sets months by the new moon and inserts a leap month seven times in every 19-year cycle to stay aligned with the solar year. Sui age reckoning, counting from 1 at birth, is likewise a long-standing East Asian convention. The science that the chart contradicts arrived in 1905, when Nettie Stevens at Bryn Mawr College and Edmund Beecher Wilson at Columbia independently established that sex is determined by a chromosome, the Y contributed by the father. Reliable prenatal determination followed much later: amniocentesis for fetal cells came into use in the 1950s and 1960s, obstetric ultrasound developed after Ian Donald's work in Glasgow from 1958, and non-invasive testing of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal blood became commercially available after 2011. Formal evaluation of the chart itself is recent, with large registry studies published from about 2009 and 2010 onward reporting no predictive value.
