Shoe Size Converter

This converter uses three straight-line relations tied to a single measured foot length in centimeters. US men's sizing is modelled as (length - 22) / 0.847 + 1, where the divisor 0.847 cm is one third of an inch, the barleycorn step separating consecutive full sizes on Anglo-American scales, with half sizes falling one sixth of an inch apart. The European figure comes from the Paris Point relation, length x 1.5 + 2, in which the multiplier converts centimeters into two-thirds-centimeter units and the added 2 accounts for the shoe last being longer than the foot inside it. The UK line runs about one full number below US men's because the two scales share an increment but not an origin. All three are linear, so a 1 cm error in measurement moves the US number by roughly 1.2 sizes and the EU number by 1.5. That sensitivity is the practical caveat. A tracing pen held at an angle, measuring while seated rather than standing, or measuring the shorter foot can each shift the answer by a full size. Feet lengthen under load and swell through the day by up to half a size, so measure standing, in the afternoon, wearing the socks intended for the shoe, and use the larger foot. Roughly 1 to 1.5 cm of toe room beyond the measured length is normal for walking and athletic shoes, less for dress shoes with a tapered toe, and width is not captured by these formulas at all.

The step size in these formulas is older than any of the national systems that use it. English shoemakers sized by the barleycorn, one third of an inch, a unit tied by tradition to the definition of the inch as three grains of barley laid end to end; the earliest scales simply counted barleycorns from a fixed starting length. British practice set that starting point at about four inches for the smallest children's size and continued upward, resetting the count on reaching the adult range, which produced the familiar UK numbering. The American trade adopted the same one-third-inch increment but began its count from a slightly different origin, and the fixed offset between the two scales that survives today is entirely a consequence of that choice rather than of any difference in feet. The continental relation has a separate origin. French shoemakers worked in Paris Points of two thirds of a centimeter, a unit taken from the length of the last rather than the foot, which is why converting to EU sizes requires adding a constant for the toe allowance built into the last. Because the Paris Point scale was never split by gender or age, one European number covers any wearer of a given foot length, while the barleycorn scales carry separate men's, women's and children's series that must be reconciled by offsets whenever a conversion is made.
