Formula: US Men = (foot_cm - 22) / 0.847 + 1 | EU = foot_cm × 1.5 + 2 | UK = US - 1
Worked example — US Men 5.7 / US Women 7.2 / EU 41 / UK 4.7
Formula
US Men = (foot_cm - 22) / 0.847 + 1 | EU = foot_cm × 1.5 + 2 | UK = US - 1
Trace or measure your foot from heel to the longest toe in centimeters — do this standing, in the afternoon or evening when feet are naturally at their largest from daily swelling. US men's sizes scale roughly 0.847 cm per half-size starting near 22 cm; EU sizes use the Paris Point system (1.5× foot length in cm, plus 2); UK sizes run about one full size below US men's. Add 1-1.5 cm of extra room for comfortable toe space.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 26 cm foot (typical US Men's 6 / US Women's 8)
Problem:Foot length measured heel-to-toe = 26 cm
Solution:US Men = (26-22)/0.847+1 = 5.72, rounds to 5.7 (roughly a 6) US Women = 5.7+1.5 = 7.2 (roughly a 7.5-8) EU = 26×1.5+2 = 41 UK Men = 5.7-1 = 4.7
Result:US Men 5.7 / US Women 7.2 / EU 41 / UK 4.7
Example 2: 29 cm foot (large men's size)
Problem:Foot length measured heel-to-toe = 29 cm
Solution:US Men = (29-22)/0.847+1 = 9.26 EU = 29×1.5+2 = 45.5, rounds to 45-46 UK Men = 9.26-1 = 8.26
Result:US Men 9.3 / EU 45-46 / UK 8.3
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I size up or down?
When between sizes, size UP. Shoes that are too small cause blisters and bunions. Measure both feet — use the larger measurement.
Why do shoe sizes differ so much between countries?
Shoe sizing systems evolved independently. US and UK sizes use barleycorn units (1/3 inch increments) with different starting points. European sizes use Paris points (2/3 cm increments). Japanese sizes measure foot length directly in centimeters. This is why a US Men's 10 equals UK 9, EU 44, and JP 28 — they all refer to the same foot length but use different measurement conventions.
How should I measure my foot at home for the most accurate size?
Trace your foot on paper while standing (not sitting) in the afternoon when feet are at their largest due to natural swelling. Measure the longest distance from heel to toe and the widest part across the ball of your foot. Add 1-1.5 cm (about half an inch) to your foot length for proper shoe fit and toe room.
Does shoe width matter as much as length?
Yes. Standard widths are labeled B (narrow) to EE (wide) in the US. Wide feet in a narrow shoe cause bunions, corns, and discomfort regardless of length. If your foot is unusually wide, measure across the ball of the foot and compare to width charts. Many athletic and work boot brands offer multiple width options for a proper fit.
