Cantilever Retaining Wall Calculator

A cantilever retaining wall resists earth pressure structurally rather than by sheer mass. The vertical stem bends like a fixed-end cantilever, and the base slab beneath it recruits the weight of the backfill sitting on the heel as free stabilizing load, which is what makes the form economical for heights of roughly 3 to 8 meters. Lateral demand is taken from Rankine active theory, where Ka equals (1 - sin phi) divided by (1 + sin phi); a typical granular backfill at phi of 30 degrees gives Ka of 0.333, and a well compacted sand at 34 degrees gives 0.283. The soil thrust 0.5 Ka gamma H squared grows with the square of height and acts at H/3 above the base, while a uniform surcharge contributes a rectangular Ka q H acting at mid-height. Resistance is checked three ways: overturning about the toe with a factor of safety of at least 2.0, base sliding with at least 1.5, and bearing pressure with the resultant inside the middle third so eccentricity stays at or below B/6 and no part of the footing goes into tension. Useful proportioning starts with a base width of 0.5 to 0.7 times the total height and a base thickness near H/10, with concrete at 24 kN/m3, soil at 17 to 20 kN/m3, and base friction coefficients of 0.4 to 0.6 for granular soil on cast concrete. Rankine theory assumes a vertical smooth wall back, horizontal cohesionless drained backfill, and enough outward movement, roughly 0.1 to 0.4 percent of the height, for the active state to develop. The dominant real-world failure mode is captured by none of these numbers: a clogged drain lets water build behind the stem, and the added hydrostatic thrust can more than double the design load. Free-draining backfill and working weep holes are structural elements, not accessories. Seismic loading needs separate Mononobe-Okabe analysis.

Earth pressure theory begins with Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, who presented his essay on applying the rules of maxima and minima to problems of statics to the French Academy of Sciences in 1773. Working from experience with military fortification, he analyzed a wedge of soil sliding along a failure plane and derived the first rational method for sizing a retaining wall. William John Macquorn Rankine published a stress-field alternative in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1857, treating the soil as a continuum at limiting equilibrium and producing the simpler coefficient expression used in this calculator. Both remain in daily use, with Coulomb preferred where wall friction and sloping backfill matter and Rankine where the simplifying assumptions hold. The cantilever form itself had to wait for reinforced concrete. Once the Hennebique system and its competitors made reinforced concrete a routine construction material in the 1890s, engineers could replace massive gravity walls with a thin stem and footing using a fraction of the material. Karl Terzaghi provided the missing soil science with Erdbaumechanik in 1925, establishing effective stress and showing quantitatively why drainage governs retaining wall behavior. Codified stability checks with explicit factors of safety spread through agency design manuals over the mid-twentieth century, and structural proportioning of the stem and footing is now governed in the United States by ACI 318. Since AASHTO adopted its LRFD Bridge Design Specifications in 1994, transportation practice has migrated toward load and resistance factor design, though the classical 2.0 overturning and 1.5 sliding checks remain the standard screening tool for preliminary sizing.
