Wedding photography is priced as a package rather than an hourly service because the deliverable is a fixed-date, unrepeatable event with a long post-production tail. This model starts with coverage hours at the primary photographer's rate, then layers on the components that actually differentiate packages. A second shooter is charged at about 40 percent of the primary rate, reflecting both a lower assistant day rate and the fact that the second shooter's frames still pass through the primary photographer's edit. Editing is priced per delivered image rather than per hour because delivery counts drive the workload: a common expectation is roughly 40 to 80 edited images per hour of coverage, so an eight-hour wedding typically yields 400 to 600 finished frames. Albums are priced as a base plus a per-page cost, since binding, cover materials and design time are largely fixed while spreads scale. The 15 percent overhead line covers liability and equipment insurance, backup bodies and cards, gallery hosting, contracts, and the unbillable hours of consultations, timeline planning and culling. Two caveats matter. First, this is a cost-and-labour build, while wedding pricing in practice is strongly market-driven, with major metropolitan rates commonly running 30 to 50 percent above national averages. Second, the Essential, Classic and Luxe tiers are derived by scaling one computed figure, so their image counts and hours should be checked against what you can actually deliver rather than adopted unchanged.

Wedding photography as a documentary record of the whole day is a post-war development. Before the 1940s, wedding portraits were usually made in a studio before or after the ceremony, because plate and early roll-film cameras with flash powder were impractical at a live event. Commercially, digital capture in the early 2000s removed the per-frame film and proofing costs that had underwritten print-order revenue, so photographers moved to front-loaded package pricing with defined image counts, second-shooter options and album tiers. Consumer wedding planning sites launched in the mid-1990s, including The Knot in 1996, made average price data public and pushed the trade toward the published, directly comparable package structures that dominate the market today.
