Name numerology converts letters to digits and reduces the total, and the notable feature of this tool is that two incompatible conversion tables run side by side. The Pythagorean table is purely positional across the 26-letter Latin alphabet: A to I take 1 to 9, J to R repeat 1 to 9, and S to Z take 1 to 8. The Chaldean table assigns only 1 to 8, reserving 9 as sacred and never allocating it to a letter, and its values are said to follow the sound of each letter rather than alphabetical order, so O is 7 and F is 8. From the same name the tool derives four figures: the Expression from all letters, the Soul Urge from the vowels A, E, I, O and U, the Personality from the consonants, and a separate Chaldean total. Sensitivity to input is the main caveat. The letter Y is treated as a consonant here and scored 7, but many practitioners reclassify Y as a vowel when it carries a vowel sound, as in Lynn or Mary, which moves 7 from the Personality total into the Soul Urge total and can change both numbers. Only characters A to Z score at all, so accents, apostrophes, hyphens and spaces contribute nothing, and a name written in Cyrillic, Devanagari or Arabic has no value until it is transliterated, at which point the answer depends on the transliteration chosen. Adding or dropping a middle name typically shifts an Expression total by ten to forty before reduction. None of this is empirically testable; the mapping is a convention of a base-10, Latin-alphabet tradition.

Letters serving as numerals is a genuine feature of ancient writing systems. Greek used alphabetic numerals, with alpha as 1, iota as 10 and rho as 100, and Hebrew did the same, which made summing the letters of a word a natural operation. The Greek practice is called isopsephy and the Hebrew gematria, and both are attested well before the common era. Revelation 13:18, instructing the reader to reckon the number of the beast as 666, is a surviving instance of a name encoded by its numerical value. Neither ancient system produced the tables used here, because neither used the Latin alphabet in its modern 26-letter form. The Pythagorean table was assembled in the United States in the early twentieth century, principally by Mrs. L. Dow Balliett, who published from about 1903, and was developed by her student Dr. Juno Jordan, who lived from 1884 to 1984. The rival table reached English readers through Cheiro, the pen name of the Irish-born William John Warner, who styled himself Count Louis Hamon and lived from 1866 to 1936; his Cheiro's Book of Numbers appeared in 1926 and presented the system as Chaldean, meaning Babylonian. No cuneiform source for that table survives, so the label is best read as a claim of prestige rather than a documented line of transmission.
