The soul urge number comes from a single mapping rule: in Pythagorean numerology the 26 letters are laid out in rows of nine, so A through I take the values 1 through 9, J through R repeat 1 through 9, and S through Z take 1 through 8. The vowel values used here fall straight out of that grid - A is the 1st letter so 1, E the 5th so 5, I the 9th so 9, O the 15th which reduces to 6, U the 21st which reduces to 3, and Y the 25th which reduces to 7. Only the vowels are summed, on the reasoning that vowels carry the sounded, interior part of a name while consonants form its outward shape, which is why the consonant-only total is read as the personality number. The total is then collapsed by digital root, adding the digits repeatedly, with 11, 22 and 33 held back as master numbers. For a typical three-part Western name the vowel sum usually lands somewhere between about 10 and 60, so nearly every single-digit result is reachable, and master numbers are uncommon rather than rare. The main limitations are practical. Results depend entirely on spelling, so nicknames, transliterations and anglicized surnames give different answers, and the scheme assumes a Latin alphabet with written vowels, which does not transfer to abjads such as Hebrew or Arabic. Chaldean numerology uses a different value table that omits 9 and produces different totals from the same name. Numerology has no empirical support and is best treated as a reflective exercise.

Assigning numbers to letters is ancient, but the specific system used here is modern. Greek isopsephy and Hebrew gematria both worked because those alphabets doubled as numeral systems, so every word already carried a numeric value. The Latin alphabet never had that property, so a mapping had to be invented. The attribution to Pythagoras, who lived roughly 570 to 495 BCE, reflects the Pythagorean belief that number underlies reality rather than any surviving evidence that he taught a letter-to-number table. The modern Western chart was assembled in the United States in the early twentieth century. L. Dow Balliett of Atlantic City, who lived from 1861 to 1929, published a series of books beginning around 1903 that tied letters to numerical vibrations and musical tones. Her student Julia Seton helped popularize the practice and the word numerology in the 1910s and 1920s. Florence Campbell's Your Days Are Numbered, published in 1931, and later Juno Jordan's Numerology: The Romance in Your Name, published in 1965, formalized the core reading into the set of numbers still used today: life path from the birth date, expression from all the letters, personality from the consonants, and heart's desire or soul urge from the vowels. The vowel-consonant split, and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, date from this period rather than from antiquity.
