Formula

Ideal Desk Height = (height * 0.25) + (height * 0.145); Monitor Distance = height * 0.36

Uses anthropometric proportions to calculate ergonomic dimensions. Seat height is 25% of standing height, elbow height adds 14.5% of height above the seat for desk surface, and arm length (36% of height) determines monitor distance. These proportions are derived from human factors engineering research across diverse populations.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Optimizing Setup for 5\'10" Office Worker

Problem:A 5\'10" (70 inches) person uses a standard 30-inch desk with a 17-inch chair and 27-inch monitor, working 8 hours daily.

Solution:Ideal seat height = 70 * 0.25 = 17.5 inches (current: 17 โ€” close)\nIdeal desk height = 17.5 + 70 * 0.145 = 17.5 + 10.15 = 27.7 inches (current: 30 โ€” too high by 2.3 inches)\nMonitor distance = 70 * 0.36 = 25.2 inches\nEye height seated = 17.5 + 70 * 0.33 = 40.6 inches (monitor top)\nStanding desk height = 70 * 0.63 = 44.1 inches

Result:Desk is 2.3 inches too high โ€” consider a keyboard tray or raise chair and add footrest. Overall score: 78/100.

Example 2: Tall Person Ergonomic Adjustments

Problem:A 6\'4" (76 inches) person finds standard furniture uncomfortable. Calculate all ideal dimensions.

Solution:Ideal seat height = 76 * 0.25 = 19.0 inches\nIdeal desk height = 19.0 + 76 * 0.145 = 19.0 + 11.02 = 30.0 inches\nMonitor distance = 76 * 0.36 = 27.4 inches\nEye height seated = 19.0 + 76 * 0.33 = 44.1 inches\nStanding desk height = 76 * 0.63 = 47.9 inches

Result:Standard 30-inch desk works well. Chair needs 19-inch height. Standing desk should be set to ~48 inches.
