UX Copy Readability & Tone Checker

Check grade level and tone of UX writing, emails, and marketing copy. Enter values for instant results with step-by-step formulas.

Formula

Grade = 0.39 (Words/Sentences) + 11.8 (Syllables/Words) - 15.59

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula estimates the education level required to understand a text. It heavily penalizes long sentences and complex (multi-syllable) words. A score of 6.0 means a 6th grader can understand it. For UX, aim for 6-8.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Error Message

Problem:Original: 'The authentication credentials provided were rejected by the server.'

Solution:Improved: 'Incorrect password. Please try again.'

Result:Grade: 12 -> 2. Tone: Formal -> Helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good grade level for UX copy?

Aim for Grade 6-8. This matches the reading level of the average adult and is accessible to non-native speakers. For complex B2B products, Grade 9-10 is acceptable, but simpler is always better.

How does tone affect conversion?

Tone builds trust. A robotic tone creates distance. A warm, human tone (without being cheesy) increases engagement. Urgent tone works for errors but hurts onboarding.

Can copy be too simple?

Yes. If you remove necessary nuance, users might make mistakes. Simplicity should never come at the cost of accuracy.

Does readability affect SEO?

Yes. Search engines prefer content that satisfies user intent quickly. High bounce rates from confusing text hurt rankings.
