Formula

ft-lb = Nm x 0.7375621493

Where ft-lb is foot-pounds and Nm is Newton-meters. The conversion factor is derived from the relationship between pounds-force and Newtons (1 lbf = 4.44822 N) and feet and meters (1 ft = 0.3048 m). To convert ft-lb to Nm, divide by 0.7375621493 or multiply by 1.3558179483.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Engine Torque Specification Conversion

Problem:A European car manual specifies the wheel lug nuts should be tightened to 110 Nm. What is this in ft-lb?

Solution:ft-lb = Nm x 0.7375621493\nft-lb = 110 x 0.7375621493\nft-lb = 81.13 foot-pounds\n\nAlso in inch-pounds: 110 x 8.8507 = 973.58 in-lb

Result:110 Nm = 81.13 ft-lb

Example 2: American Torque Spec to Metric

Problem:A repair manual lists a bolt torque of 75 ft-lb. Convert this to Newton-meters for a metric torque wrench.

Solution:Nm = ft-lb / 0.7375621493\nNm = 75 / 0.7375621493\nNm = 101.69 Newton-meters\n\nAlso: 101.69 Nm x 10.197 = 1037.14 kgf-cm

Result:75 ft-lb = 101.69 Nm
