Formula

MB = KB / 1024 (binary) | MB = KB / 1000 (decimal) | KB = MB x 1024 (binary)

Kilobytes and megabytes differ by a factor that depends on the measurement system. In binary (used by operating systems), 1 MB = 1024 KB because computers use powers of 2. In decimal (used by manufacturers), 1 MB = 1000 KB following the SI prefix system. The conversion simply divides or multiplies by this factor.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Photo File Size Conversion

Problem:A camera produces photos that are 5,120 KB each. How many MB is that?

Solution:Binary: 5120 KB / 1024 = 5 MB\nDecimal: 5120 KB / 1000 = 5.12 MB\nIn bytes: 5120 x 1024 = 5,242,880 bytes (binary)

Result:5,120 KB = 5 MB (binary) or 5.12 MB (decimal)

Example 2: Email Attachment Limit

Problem:Your email limits attachments to 25 MB. How many KB is that?

Solution:Binary: 25 MB x 1024 = 25,600 KB\nDecimal: 25 MB x 1000 = 25,000 KB\nIn bytes: 25,600 x 1024 = 26,214,400 bytes

Result:25 MB = 25,600 KB (binary) or 25,000 KB (decimal)
