Data is measured in bits (binary digits). Bytes group 8 bits. Larger units use either decimal prefixes (kilo=1000, mega=1,000,000) or binary prefixes (kibi=1024, mebi=1,048,576). How many bits are in a byte?
There are exactly 8 bits in 1 byte. A bit is the smallest unit of digital data, representing a single binary value of 0 or 1. A byte groups 8 bits together, allowing it to represent 256 different values (2 to the power of 8). This 8-bit byte became the standard in the 1960s and is the fundamental unit for measuring data storage and memory. All larger units (kilobytes, megabytes, etc.) are based on multiples of the byte.
What is the difference between a kilobyte (KB) and a kibibyte (KiB)?
A kilobyte (KB) uses the decimal SI prefix where 1 KB equals 1,000 bytes. A kibibyte (KiB) uses the binary prefix where 1 KiB equals 1,024 bytes (2 to the power of 10). The binary prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) were introduced by the IEC in 1998 to resolve the ambiguity of using SI prefixes for binary quantities. The difference grows with scale: 1 GB versus 1 GiB differs by about 7.4%, which amounts to roughly 73.7 million bytes.
What is a nibble?
A nibble (also spelled nybble) is a unit of data equal to 4 bits, or half a byte. A nibble can represent 16 different values (2 to the power of 4), which maps exactly to one hexadecimal digit. This makes nibbles particularly useful in computing for representing hex values. For example, the byte value 0xA5 consists of two nibbles: 0xA (1010 in binary) and 0x5 (0101 in binary). The term is a playful derivation from byte, since a nibble is smaller.
Why do storage manufacturers use decimal prefixes while computers use binary?
Storage manufacturers use decimal prefixes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) because it is the technically correct SI usage and produces larger-seeming numbers for marketing. Computers and operating systems historically used powers of 2 (1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) because binary addressing is fundamental to how memory and processors work. This discrepancy means a 500 GB hard drive shows approximately 465 GiB in your operating system, leading to the common misconception of missing storage space.
