Formula

Volume (mL) = Dose (mg) / Concentration (mg/mL)

The volume of liquid medication to administer equals the prescribed dose in milligrams divided by the concentration of the solution in milligrams per milliliter. The concentration is found on the medication label and indicates how much active ingredient is dissolved in each milliliter of solution.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Pediatric Amoxicillin Dose

Problem:A child needs 400 mg of amoxicillin. The suspension is labeled 250 mg/5 mL. How many mL should be given?

Solution:Concentration = 250 mg / 5 mL = 50 mg/mL\nVolume = Dose / Concentration = 400 mg / 50 mg/mL = 8 mL\nVerification: 8 mL x 50 mg/mL = 400 mg (correct)

Result:Administer 8 mL (1.6 teaspoons) of the amoxicillin suspension

Example 2: Injectable Morphine Calculation

Problem:A patient is prescribed 6 mg of morphine IV. The vial contains 10 mg/mL. What volume should be drawn?

Solution:Concentration = 10 mg/mL\nVolume = Dose / Concentration = 6 mg / 10 mg/mL = 0.6 mL\nVerification: 0.6 mL x 10 mg/mL = 6 mg (correct)

Result:Draw 0.6 mL from the morphine vial using a calibrated syringe
