Formula

Distance = Steps x Step Length | Est. Step Length = Height x 0.413 | Calories = Steps x 0.04

Total distance is calculated by multiplying the number of steps by the step length. Step length can be measured directly or estimated from height (walking step is about 41.3% of height). Calorie estimation uses a simplified factor of 0.04 kcal per step for an average adult.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Daily Walking Goal

Problem:How far is 10,000 steps if your step length is 76 cm?

Solution:Distance = 10,000 x 76 cm = 760,000 cm\nMeters: 760,000 / 100 = 7,600 m\nKilometers: 7,600 / 1,000 = 7.6 km\nMiles: 7,600 / 1,609.34 = 4.722 mi

Result:10,000 steps = 7.6 km (4.72 miles)

Example 2: Marathon Step Count

Problem:How many steps to complete a marathon (42.195 km) with a 78 cm step length?

Solution:Total distance: 42,195 m = 4,219,500 cm\nSteps: 4,219,500 / 78 = 54,096 steps\nEstimated time: 54,096 / 100 = 541 minutes = 9 hours (walking pace)

Result:A marathon requires approximately 54,096 steps at 78 cm stride

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I determine my step length?

The most accurate method is to walk a known distance (like 20 meters) counting your steps, then divide the distance by the number of steps. A quick estimate is to multiply your height by 0.413 for walking step length or 0.45 for running stride length. For example, a person 170 cm tall has an estimated walking step length of about 70 cm. Average adult step length ranges from 60 to 80 cm depending on height, pace, and leg length.
