Typing Speed Calculator - WPM Test
Test your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and characters per minute (CPM). Measure gross and net WPM with accuracy percentage for skill assessment.
Formula
WPM = (Correct Characters / 5) / Time (min)
We use the international standard where a 'word' is defined as 5 characters. We count total correct characters, divide by 5, then divide by the elapsed time in minutes.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Average Typist
Problem: Typing a standard email.
Solution: Speed: 40 WPM\nAccuracy: 95%\nTime for 200 word email: ~5 minutes\n\nResult: Functional but room for improvement.
Result: 40 WPM - Average
Example 2: Touch Typist
Problem: Writing a report.
Solution: Speed: 75 WPM\nAccuracy: 98%\nTime for 200 word email: ~2.5 minutes\n\nResult: Highly productive, standard for office jobs.
Result: 75 WPM - Proficient
Example 3: Expert Typist
Problem: Transcription work.
Solution: Speed: 110 WPM\nAccuracy: 99%\nTime for 200 word email: < 2 minutes\n\nResult: Top 1% of typists.
Result: 110 WPM - Expert
Frequently Asked Questions
What is WPM and how is it calculated?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It is the standard measure of typing speed. It is calculated by taking the total number of characters typed divided by 5 (standard word length) and then dividing by the time in minutes. Formula: (Characters / 5) / Minutes.
What is a good typing speed?
Average User: 40 WPM. Productive Professional: 60-70 WPM. High Speed: 80-100 WPM. Competitive/Expert: 120+ WPM. The world record is over 210 WPM.
How can I improve my typing speed?
1. Learn Touch Typing: Use all 10 fingers and don't look at the keyboard. 2. Posture: Sit straight, wrists floating. 3. Accuracy First: Speed comes naturally when you stop making mistakes. 4. Practice: Use tools like this regularly.
What is Touch Typing?
Touch typing is typing without looking at the keys, relying on muscle memory. You place your fingers on the 'home row' (ASDF JKL;) and reach for other keys. It is the most efficient way to type.
Does keyboard type affect speed?
Yes. Mechanical keyboards with tactile switches (like Cherry MX Blue/Brown) often help typists feel actuation points better than membrane keyboards. Laptop keyboards with low travel can be fast but may fatigue fingers.
Does this test measure raw or net speed?
This test measures net speed effectively because it highlights errors immediately. However, standard WPM calculation is based on correct characters. Uncorrected errors reduce your score.
