Frequently Asked Questions
What is UTR?
Universal Tennis Rating (1-16.5) measures tennis ability regardless of age, gender, or location. It uses match results weighted by opponent strength.
How is UTR estimated here?
This estimator uses: UTR = Average Opponent UTR + (Win Rate minus 50%) times 3. Beating opponents rated above you pushes your UTR up, while losing to lower-rated players pulls it down. The official UTR algorithm is proprietary and weights recent results more heavily.
What do UTR levels correspond to in real tennis?
UTR 1-3 is beginner. UTR 4-6 is recreational club level. UTR 7-9 is strong club and high school varsity. UTR 10-12 is college varsity level. UTR 13-14 is professional challenger level. UTR 15-16.5 is ATP and WTA tour professionals.
Why might my official UTR differ from this estimate?
The official UTR algorithm weights each match individually using the specific score line (not just win or loss), the exact rating of that specific opponent at the time of the match, how recently the match was played, and whether it was a verified sanctioned event. It also applies reliability adjustments for players with few recorded matches. This simplified estimator only uses your overall win rate and an average opponent rating, so it will diverge from your true UTR, especially if your results were unusually lopsided (very close three-setters versus routine straight-set wins) or if your match history is limited.
