Formula

APM = Total Actions / Game Duration (minutes)

Actions Per Minute measures gameplay speed. StarCraft pros: 300-500 APM. LoL pros: 200-400. Effective APM excludes meaningless spam.

Worked Examples

Example 1: RTS game

Problem:3000 actions in 20 min

Solution:APM = 150, eAPM = 105

Result:150 APM (Competitive)

Example 2: Pro-level StarCraft II match

Problem:9,000 actions across a 22-minute match

Solution:APM = 9000/22 = 409, eAPM \u2248 286

Result:409 APM (Professional)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is good APM?

Casual: 40-80. Competitive: 100-200. Semi-pro: 200-300. Professional StarCraft: 300-500+. Speed alone does not equal skill.

How is APM calculated?

APM = Total Actions / Game Duration in minutes. Actions include every keyboard press and mouse click registered by the game. Effective APM (eAPM) filters out spam and meaningless repeated commands to show only meaningful inputs.

What is the difference between APM and eAPM?

APM counts every input, including spam-clicking and unnecessary key presses. Effective APM (eAPM) excludes redundant actions and better reflects actual decision-making speed. Top players have high eAPM relative to their total APM.

Does higher APM always mean a better player?

No. APM measures mechanical input speed, not decision quality, strategic judgment, or game sense. Many high-ranked players win with moderate APM by making efficient, high-value decisions, while some very high-APM players waste inputs on unnecessary actions like excessive camera taps or redundant unit selection. Coaches generally recommend focusing on eAPM and build-order efficiency before chasing raw APM numbers, since mechanical speed without sound strategy rarely translates into higher rank.
