The minimum cage size for a Syrian hamster is 800 square inches of unbroken floor space, which translates to approximately 5,160 square centimeters. This is the recommendation from the German veterinary association and most modern hamster welfare organizations. Common cage dimensions meeting this minimum include 40 by 20 inches or equivalent. However, bigger is always better for hamster welfare. Many experienced owners recommend 1,000 square inches or more. Syrian hamsters are the largest pet hamster species and are strictly solitary after about 8 weeks of age, meaning each hamster needs its own cage.
