Moving Cost Calculator Formula

Moving Cost = Base Rate + Distance Charges + Labor + Season Adjustment

Professional moves are estimated using shipment weight, distance, labor hours, and seasonal demand. DIY moves factor in truck rental (base + per-mile), fuel for the round trip, and packing supplies. Summer moves cost 20-30% more due to peak demand. Estimates provide a range to account for variable factors.

Moving Cost Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire movers?

Professional moving costs depend on distance, home size, and season. Local moves (under 100 miles) typically cost $800-2,500 for a 2-bedroom home. Long-distance moves (500+ miles) range from $2,500-7,500+. Cross-country moves can cost $4,000-12,000+. These include labor, truck, mileage, and basic insurance. Additional costs include packing services ($300-1,000), specialty items (piano, hot tub), storage, and insurance upgrades.

How many boxes do I need for moving?

A general guide: Studio = 15-25 boxes, 1 BR = 25-35, 2 BR = 35-50, 3 BR = 50-75, 4 BR = 75-100, 5 BR = 100-125+. This includes small (books, heavy items), medium (kitchen, decor), and large (bedding, clothes) boxes. You will also need wardrobe boxes ($8-15 each), dish packs, and mirror/picture boxes. Buy 10% extra boxes. Many moving companies offer box buyback programs for unused boxes.

What should I know about moving insurance?

Basic valuation coverage (included free) covers only $0.60 per pound per item — a 50-lb TV would only get you $30. Full value protection costs 1-2% of your total shipment value and covers repair, replacement, or cash settlement at current value. Third-party moving insurance is also available and may offer better coverage at lower cost. Always document valuable items with photos before moving and keep an inventory list.
