Due Date = Retrieval Date + 266 days | Or: Transfer Date + 261 days (day-5 blastocyst) or + 263 days (day-3)
IVF due dates are more precise than natural conception. From egg retrieval: add 266 days (38 weeks). From embryo transfer: add 261 days for day-5 blast or 263 days for day-3 embryo. These equal 40 weeks from the calculated LMP.

Example 1: Day-5 transfer
Problem:Transfer date June 20, 2024 (day-5 blastocyst)
Solution:Due date = June 20 + 261 days = March 8, 2025
Result:Due date: March 8, 2025
Example 2: Egg Retrieval Only Known
Problem:Egg retrieval on May 1, 2024; the embryo transfer date was not recorded.
Solution:Due date = May 1 + 266 days = January 22, 2025 (equivalent to a calculated LMP of February 15, 2024, since 266 + 14 = 280 days).
Result:Due date: January 22, 2025 — calculated the same way regardless of transfer day
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a leap year affect date difference calculations?
Leap years add February 29, extending the year to 366 days and affecting any date range spanning that date. January 1 to December 31 is 365 days in a regular year but 366 in a leap year. Applications must define whether "one year from February 28" maps to February 28 or 29 in a leap year. Financial instruments use specific day-count conventions — Actual/360, Actual/365, or Actual/Actual — to handle these edge cases consistently.
