Formula
Risk Score based on WHO/ISH CVD risk charts — Age, BP, Cholesterol ratio, smoking, diabetes
Simplified cardiovascular risk assessment. TC:HDL ratio is a key predictor. Risk doubles with smoking and diabetes. This is an estimate — consult your doctor.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 55yo, BP 140, smoker
Problem:Age 55, SBP 140, TC 5.5, HDL 1.1, smoker
Solution:Ratio 5.0, elevated BP and smoking → ~20% risk
Result:~20% (High risk)
Example 2: 45yo Non-Smoker with Good HDL
Problem:Age 45, SBP 118, TC 4.8, HDL 1.6, non-smoker, no diabetes.
Solution:Ratio = 4.8/1.6 = 3.0 (below the 4.0 target). Age and BP contribute little extra risk since SBP is under 120 and age is under 50. Combined estimate stays in the low single digits.
Result:~3% (Low risk) — favorable HDL is doing a lot of the protective work here
