Free GPA Calculator — College & High School GPA | NovaCalculator

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of course grades on a 4.0 scale, calculated by dividing total grade points (grade value × credit hours) by total credit hours attempted. This calculator computes semester, cumulative, and weighted GPA from your letter grades and credits.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credits

Multiply each course's credit hours by its grade value (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.), sum all, then divide by total credits.

How do you calculate GPA step by step?

Example 1: Semester GPA

Problem:Calculate GPA: English (3 cr, A), Math (4 cr, B+), Science (4 cr, A-), History (3 cr, B).

Solution:Grade Points:\nEnglish: 3 × 4.0 = 12.0\nMath: 4 × 3.3 = 13.2\nScience: 4 × 3.7 = 14.8\nHistory: 3 × 3.0 = 9.0\n\nTotal: 49.0 points / 14 credits = 3.50

Result:GPA: 3.50

Example 2: Cumulative GPA

Problem:Previous: 3.2 GPA, 60 credits. This semester: 3.8 GPA, 15 credits. New cumulative?

Solution:Previous points: 3.2 × 60 = 192\nNew points: 3.8 × 15 = 57\n\nTotal: 249 points / 75 credits = 3.32

Result:Cumulative GPA: 3.32

Example 3: Target GPA

Problem:Current: 2.8 GPA, 90 credits. Need 3.0 to graduate with 120 credits. What semester GPA needed?

Solution:Need: 3.0 × 120 = 360 points\nHave: 2.8 × 90 = 252 points\nNeed: 360 - 252 = 108 points in 30 credits\n\nRequired: 108/30 = 3.6 GPA

Result:Need 3.6 GPA for 30 credits

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credits. Grade points = credit hours × grade value (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.). A 3-credit A and 4-credit B: (3×4.0 + 4×3.0)/(3+4) = 24/7 = 3.43.

What is a good GPA?

Generally: 3.5-4.0 is excellent (honors), 3.0-3.49 is good, 2.5-2.99 is average, 2.0-2.49 is below average. Requirements vary by program—law schools want 3.7+, medical schools 3.5+.

What's the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA is for one term only. Cumulative GPA includes all semesters since starting college. Cumulative is what appears on transcripts and is used for honors/applications.

Do all schools use the 4.0 scale?

Most US schools use 4.0, but some use 5.0 (with weighted AP/honors classes). International systems vary: UK uses classes (First, 2:1), some use percentages.
