Formula: Differential = (Score - CR) × 113 / SR | Handicap = Average of best differentials × 0.96

Golf Handicap Calculator Formula
Differential = (Score - CR) × 113 / SR | Handicap = Average of best differentials × 0.96
CR = Course Rating, SR = Slope Rating (standard 113). Average the lowest differentials for the number of rounds you have: the lowest 1 from 5-6 rounds, lowest 2 from 7-8, lowest 3 from 9-10, rising to the lowest 8 from a full 20. The 0.96 multiplier is the pre-2020 USGA Bonus for Excellence factor, so this index reads slightly below an official WHS figure.
Golf Handicap Calculator — Worked Examples
Example 1: 5 scores, CR=72.0, Slope=113
Problem:Scores: 84, 86, 83, 85, 87 with Course Rating 72.0 and Slope Rating 113
Solution:Slope is the standard 113, so the 113/SR factor is 1 and each differential is just score minus Course Rating. Differentials: 84-72=12.0, 86-72=14.0, 83-72=11.0, 85-72=13.0, 87-72=15.0 With 5 scores the table uses only the single lowest differential: 11.0 Average of the differentials used = 11.0 Handicap Index = 11.0 × 0.96 = 10.56
Result:Handicap Index: 10.6 | Best Differential: 11.0 | Scores Used: 1 of 5
Example 2: 10 scores on a sloped course, CR=71.5, Slope=128
Problem:Scores 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93 and 94 from a course rated 71.5 with a Slope Rating of 128
Solution:Scaling factor = 113 / 128 = 0.8828 Differential = (Score - 71.5) × 0.8828 85 → 13.5 × 0.8828 = 11.9 86 → 14.5 × 0.8828 = 12.8 87 → 15.5 × 0.8828 = 13.7 88 → 16.5 × 0.8828 = 14.6 (the remaining six run from 15.4 up to 19.9) With 9-10 scores the table uses the lowest 3: 11.9, 12.8, 13.7 Average = (11.918 + 12.801 + 13.684) / 3 = 12.80 Handicap Index = 12.80 × 0.96 = 12.29
Result:Handicap Index: 12.3 | Best Differential: 11.9 | Scores Used: 3 of 10
Golf Handicap Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the World Handicap System (WHS) handicap?
The World Handicap System (WHS) is the unified global standard for calculating golf handicaps, adopted in 2020. Your WHS Handicap Index represents your potential scoring ability, calculated from your best score differentials across recent rounds. It allows players of all skill levels to compete equitably.
How are score differentials calculated?
A score differential measures how your gross score compares to the course difficulty: Differential = (Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating. A lower differential means you played closer to your potential. The WHS uses the best differentials from your most recent 20 rounds.
What is a course rating and slope rating?
Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer (0 handicap) on a specific course under normal conditions. Slope Rating (range 55–155, standard 113) measures the relative difficulty of the course for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. Both values are printed on scorecards and available from golf clubs.
How many scores do you need to establish a handicap?
Under WHS, you need a minimum of 3 scores to get an initial Handicap Index, though accuracy improves significantly with more rounds. The system uses up to 20 most recent scores, applying the best 8 differentials from 20 rounds, best 6 from 17–19, best 5 from 14–16, best 4 from 11–13, and best 3 from 9–10 rounds.
What is a good golf handicap?
A handicap of 0 (scratch) means you average par. Handicaps of 1–9 are considered low (skilled), 10–18 are mid-range recreational, and 19–36 are high handicaps for beginners. The average male recreational golfer carries around a 16 handicap; the average female golfer around 28. A single-digit handicap places you in roughly the top 20% of all players.
What is the difference between a Handicap Index and a Course Handicap?
Your Handicap Index is a portable measure of potential, the number Golf Handicap Calculator returns. A Course Handicap converts it into strokes for the specific tees you are playing: Course Handicap = Index x (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating - Par). The slope term scales the index to the difficulty of the layout for a bogey golfer, and the rating-minus-par term accounts for a course that plays harder or easier than its par suggests. You post scores against the index, but you receive strokes against the Course Handicap.
What is net double bogey and how does it cap a hole score?
For handicap purposes a round is posted as an Adjusted Gross Score, and no single hole may exceed net double bogey: par plus two strokes, plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. A 10 on a par 4 where you get one stroke is recorded as a 7. The cap stops one blow-up hole from inflating an otherwise representative round. Golf Handicap Calculator takes the gross scores you type in, so adjust the wrecked holes down yourself before entering them.
What is the Playing Conditions Calculation?
The PCC is a daily adjustment the World Handicap System applies when scoring across a course is clearly out of line with expectations, usually because of wind, rain, pin positions, or course setup. It is computed from the scores actually returned that day and lands between minus 1 and plus 3, then is applied inside the differential calculation, subtracted from your score before scaling. A tough day therefore costs a player less, and an unusually easy day counts for slightly less credit.
How do the soft cap and hard cap slow a rising handicap?
Both caps work off your Low Handicap Index, the lowest index recorded in the previous 12 months. Once a new calculation sits more than 3.0 strokes above that low mark, the soft cap halves the portion of the increase beyond 3.0. The hard cap then stops the total rise at 5.0 strokes above the low index no matter how badly the scores run. Together they prevent a temporary slump or a run of poor rounds from inflating a handicap into an unfair advantage.
Can nine-hole rounds be used to build a handicap index?
Yes. A nine-hole round produces a nine-hole score differential against the nine-hole Course and Slope Ratings, and the system combines nine-hole differentials into 18-hole equivalents for the scoring record. What you cannot do is post a nine-hole score as if it were a full round. Golf Handicap Calculator expects 18-hole gross scores against 18-hole ratings, so pair your nines first or enter only complete rounds.
