Date to Date Duration Calculator

The interval between two dates has two legitimate answers, and this tool reports both. The first is a scalar day count, obtained by subtracting epoch milliseconds and dividing by 86,400,000; it is order-independent, additive, and the right quantity when you need to test a threshold such as 183 days of physical presence for tax residence or 730 days of continuous residence for a naturalisation rule. The second is a calendar breakdown in years, months and days, produced by field subtraction with borrowing from the length of the month preceding the end date. That breakdown is not additive: 1 month spanning February is 28 or 29 days while 1 month spanning July is 31, so two intervals each described as 6 months can differ by three days. Secondary figures carry their own tolerances. The week split is exact - integer division of the day count by 7 with the remainder as loose days - and is the format obstetricians use, where 40 weeks or 280 days from the last menstrual period defines the estimated due date. The business-day figure is an approximation only, scaling calendar days by 5/7; it assumes a Monday-to-Friday week and knows nothing about public holidays, so over a full year it will overstate working days by roughly the 8 to 12 statutory holidays observed in most countries. Total hours, minutes and seconds are derived from whole days multiplied by 24, 60 and 60, which ignores daylight-saving transitions that make two days of each year 23 or 25 hours long, and ignores the 27 leap seconds inserted into UTC between 1972 and 2016.

Counting days between events is one of the oldest computational problems in astronomy, and the standard solution predates modern computing by centuries. In 1583 the French scholar Joseph Justus Scaliger proposed the Julian Period, a continuous count of days from a notional epoch of 1 January 4713 BCE, precisely so that intervals could be computed by simple subtraction without regard to calendar reforms, varying month lengths or the Julian-to-Gregorian transition. Astronomers adopted the Julian Day Number and still use it; the method - convert both dates to a serial day number, subtract, then convert back - is exactly what date-difference software does today, with the epoch moved to a more convenient origin. The move to machine day-serials came with commercial computing. Spreadsheet and database systems adopted serial-date storage in the 1980s, Lotus 1-2-3 and then Microsoft Excel counting days from an epoch near 1 January 1900, and Unix systems counting seconds from 1 January 1970. The calendar breakdown, meanwhile, was standardised for legal and financial use: ISO 8601 introduced a duration notation of the form P2Y6M22D, and bond markets long before that had codified day-count conventions including 30/360 and actual/actual so that accrued interest over an interval would be computed identically by both counterparties. The distinction those conventions encode - an exact day count versus a nominal calendar period - is the same distinction this calculator surfaces by reporting both figures side by side.
