Age Difference Calculator

An age difference is the interval between two birth dates rather than the difference between two ages, and the distinction matters: the interval is fixed for life while the ratio between the two ages shrinks continuously. The calculation subtracts the earlier date from the later one component by component, borrowing days from the length of the preceding month and 12 months from the year count where needed, then reports the same interval in total days and weeks. The ratio makes the convergence visible. Ages of 20 and 30 give a ratio of 1.50; the same two people at 40 and 50 give 1.25, and at 60 and 70 give 1.17. The half your age plus seven boundary shown alongside is a folk heuristic, not a finding. It widens as people age, permitting a 3 year gap at 20 and a 23 year gap at 60, and has no empirical basis in relationship research. Population data does provide context: mean spousal age gaps in industrialised countries run about 2 to 3 years with the husband older, and that gap has narrowed over recent decades. A study by Francis and Mialon at Emory University in 2014 reported higher divorce hazards at larger gaps, but such results are correlational and confounded by income, education and remarriage.

Systematic knowledge of age gaps comes from civil registration. Compulsory registration of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales began in 1837 under the General Register Office, and comparable systems spread across Europe and North America over the following century, producing for the first time large datasets in which the ages of both spouses were recorded on the same document. Demographers used those records to study marriage patterns; John Hajnal drew on them in 1965 to describe the distinctive Western European pattern of late marriage and narrower spousal age gaps. The generational labels used for comparison are much more recent and largely journalistic or commercial in origin. Generation X entered wide use after Douglas Coupland published his novel of that name in 1991, and Millennial was coined by Neil Howe and William Strauss in Generations, also 1991. The Pew Research Center fixed the Millennial cohort at 1981 to 1996 in 2018 and has since cautioned that such boundaries are analytical tools rather than natural divisions, which is why cohort labels belong in any age gap comparison only as loose context.
