Formula

1 Pomodoro = 25 min work + 5 min break | Every 4 pomodoros: 15-30 min long break

The Pomodoro Technique (developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s) breaks work into fixed intervals โ€” traditionally 25 minutes โ€” separated by short breaks, with a longer break after every 4 intervals. This calculator divides your total available time into complete 4-pomodoro cycles (4ร— work + 3ร— short break + 1ร— long break), then fits any remaining minutes into extra single pomodoros, so you can see exactly how many focused sessions your schedule allows before you start.

Worked Examples

Example 1: 4-hour study session

Problem:4 hours available, standard 25 min work / 5 min short break / 15 min long break

Solution:Cycle length = 4ร—25 + 3ร—5 + 15 = 130 min\nFull cycles in 240 min = floor(240/130) = 1 cycle (130 min, 4 pomodoros)\nRemaining = 240-130 = 110 min โ†’ floor(110/30) = 3 extra pomodoros\nTotal = 4+3 = 7 pomodoros, productive time = 7ร—25 = 175 min (2.9 hrs)

Result:7 pomodoros (2.9 hrs productive, 65 min of breaks, 73% efficiency)

Example 2: 8-hour workday with longer sessions

Problem:8 hours available, 50 min work / 10 min short break / 20 min long break (deep-work variant)

Solution:Cycle length = 4ร—50 + 3ร—10 + 20 = 250 min\nFull cycles in 480 min = floor(480/250) = 1 cycle (250 min, 4 pomodoros)\nRemaining = 480-250 = 230 min โ†’ floor(230/60) = 3 extra pomodoros\nTotal = 4+3 = 7 pomodoros, productive time = 7ร—50 = 350 min (5.8 hrs)

Result:7 pomodoros (5.8 hrs productive, ~87% efficiency)
