Age in the Western convention is a count of completed anniversaries, not a division of elapsed time. That distinction drives the whole algorithm: you subtract birth year from target year, then decrement by one if the birthday has not yet arrived in the target year. Someone born 15 June 1990 is 39 on 1 January 2030, not 40, even though 2030 minus 1990 equals 40. The residual months and days are then recovered by borrowing from the preceding month, which is why the code inspects the actual length of that month rather than assuming 30 or 31 days. Because the Gregorian calendar is fully deterministic, including its leap rule of every fourth year except centuries not divisible by 400, a date computed centuries ahead is exact rather than estimated. The practical thresholds people query are legal ones. In the United States a learner permit is typically available at 16, legal adulthood and voting at 18, alcohol purchase at 21, dependent health coverage ends at 26, penalty-free retirement account withdrawals begin at 59 and a half, Medicare eligibility at 65, full Social Security retirement age falls between 66 and 67 depending on birth year, and required minimum distributions now begin at 73 under the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022. Two caveats apply. The calculator ignores clock time and time zones, since legal age is fixed by the calendar date on record. It also assumes the Western reckoning; East Asian traditional counting starts a newborn at one and increments at New Year, which can put a person two years older than this result.

The calendar this arithmetic depends on was fixed by the papal bull Inter gravissimas, issued by Gregory XIII in February 1582. It corrected the Julian calendar that Julius Caesar had introduced in 46 BC with advice from the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes, whose 365.25-day year ran about 11 minutes long and had accumulated roughly ten days of drift by the sixteenth century. The reform, worked out largely by the physician Aloysius Lilius and the Jesuit mathematician Christopher Clavius, deleted those days and added the century exception to the leap rule. Adoption was slow and uneven: Catholic states switched in 1582, Britain and its colonies only in 1752, Russia in 1918, and Greece in 1923, so historical birth dates before those transitions can be recorded in either style. The idea of a precise personal age recorded from birth spread with civil registration. England and Wales made birth registration compulsory in 1837, and most industrialized states followed during the nineteenth century, which is when age-based rules for schooling, conscription, and pensions became administratively possible. Germany's 1889 old-age insurance law and the United States Social Security Act of 1935 both hinged on documented birth dates. Machine computation of dates arrived with the ISO 8601 standard in 1988, which fixed the unambiguous year-month-day format used by the date inputs on this page, and with the Unix epoch convention counting seconds from 1 January 1970. South Korea formally adopted international age reckoning in June 2023, retiring its traditional system for most official purposes.
