Sizing table linen is additive geometry. The cloth must span the table surface plus the vertical overhang, called the drop, on both opposing sides, so each dimension grows by twice the drop. A 72 by 36 inch rectangular table with a 10 inch drop needs a 92 by 56 inch cloth; a 60 inch round with a 30 inch drop needs a 120 inch round. Six to ten inches is the everyday domestic range, chosen so the hem clears a seated diner's lap. Twelve to fifteen inches reads as formal. Thirty inches is the floor length used for banquets, and it is thirty because standard tables are built to a 30 inch height, so the cloth just reaches the floor. For sewing, the area figure matters. Multiplying the finished dimensions and dividing by 144 converts square inches to square feet, but yardage depends on bolt width. Most decorator and quilting cottons come 44 to 60 inches wide, so wider cloths require seaming panels, and the usual practice is a full centre panel flanked by two equal side panels so no seam runs down the middle of the table. Add one to two inches per dimension for a double-folded hem, and 10 to 15 percent extra where a print or stripe must be matched across seams. Two limitations are worth noting: on a rectangular table the corners hang diagonally and appear longer than the stated drop, and natural fibres shrink, so cotton and linen should be washed and dried before cutting to avoid losing 3 to 5 percent after the first laundering.

Covering the table with cloth is old enough to appear in Roman household inventories, where the mantele served both as a covering and as a mark of hospitality. Medieval European halls used long linen cloths that doubled as communal napkins, and by the late Middle Ages the figured linen woven in Flanders, in the damask weave named for Damascus, made table linen a display of household wealth. Cloths were made to fit specific tables and sizes were not standardised in any commercial sense, because the tables themselves were not. Standard sizes are a product of the twentieth century hospitality and rental industries. Once banquet furniture converged on a small set of dimensions, notably the six foot by thirty inch folding rectangular table and the 60 inch and 72 inch rounds that seat eight and ten, linen suppliers could stock a matching set of cloths rather than cut to order. The familiar 90, 108 and 120 inch round sizes exist precisely because they give a floor length drop on 30, 48 and 60 inch tables at a 30 inch table height. Domestic retail followed the same logic, offering 52 by 70, 60 by 84 and 60 by 102 inch rectangles aimed at four, six and eight seat dining tables. The mid century arrival of easy-care blends and later polyester spun fabrics added stain resistance and dimensional stability, which reduced the shrinkage allowance that home sewers had traditionally built into every cut.
