This tool performs equivalency conversion: it takes one quantity of carbon dioxide in kilograms and restates it as the number of familiar things that emit or absorb roughly the same amount over a year. Each conversion is a simple division by an emission or sequestration factor. The 4.6 tonnes per car per year figure comes from a typical US passenger vehicle driving about 11,500 miles at roughly 22 miles per gallon, and the 7.5 tonnes per home figure covers household energy use rather than a household total footprint, which is closer to 16 tonnes per person once food, goods and travel are included. The tree factor of 22 kg per year sits at the high end of published estimates; the US EPA uses closer to 10 kg per year for a medium urban tree averaged over its first decade. Equivalencies are communication devices, not accounting instruments. A tree stores carbon temporarily and releases it on death or fire, so equating an emission with a tree-year confuses a stock with a flow. Grid and vehicle factors are regional: a kilowatt-hour in France or Quebec carries roughly a tenth the carbon of one in Poland or West Virginia, so equivalents computed from US averages mislead elsewhere. The smartphone factor of 0.42 kg per charge used here is far above the roughly 8 grams per charge that the EPA equivalencies calculator reports, so treat that particular output as illustrative only. For disclosure under the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064, report the underlying tonnes of CO2 equivalent and cite the factor source, not the equivalency.

The convention that makes this conversion possible is the carbon dioxide equivalent, which rests on the Global Warming Potential metric introduced in the IPCC First Assessment Report in 1990. GWP expresses the radiative effect of a gas over a fixed horizon, conventionally 100 years, relative to the same mass of CO2, so methane and nitrous oxide can be folded into a single number. The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, made CO2 equivalent the operative unit for national commitments across a basket of six gases, and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, launched in 1998 by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, carried the same unit into corporate accounting with its scope 1, 2 and 3 structure. The practice of translating those tonnes into everyday objects grew out of public communication work in the 1990s and 2000s, when agencies found that abstract tonnage meant little to non-specialist audiences. The US Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator became the most widely copied reference, publishing per-vehicle, per-home and per-tree factors with documented derivations and periodic revisions as vehicle efficiency and grid mix changed. Most equivalency widgets in circulation today, including this one, are descendants of that factor set, which is why the same numbers recur across otherwise unrelated tools and why they drift out of date when the source table is updated and the copies are not.
