Methane Footprint Calculator

Methane is the second-largest contributor to anthropogenic warming after carbon dioxide, with concentrations up from roughly 722 parts per billion before industrialisation to about 1,930 ppb today. Its potency comes from strong absorption in the 7.7 micrometre infrared band combined with a short atmospheric lifetime of about 12 years, which is why it is reported as a CO2 equivalent through a Global Warming Potential rather than compared by mass. This calculator sums methane mass from four activity sectors, then applies that GWP: enteric fermentation at roughly 70 kg CH4 per head per year for dairy and beef cattle, flooded rice paddies at about 150 kg CH4 per hectare per season, fugitive losses from natural gas use at 0.019 kg CH4 per cubic metre, and anaerobic decay of organic waste at 0.06 kg CH4 per kg. The default factors are IPCC Tier 1 global averages and can be wrong by a factor of two at the individual site level. Enteric emissions scale with dry matter intake, so a high-yielding dairy cow in a confinement system can exceed 130 kg CH4 per year while a small tropical breed may fall below 40 kg. Rice paddy emissions depend heavily on water management, and mid-season drainage can cut them by 40 to 60 percent against continuous flooding. Gas leakage is the least certain input: aerial and satellite surveys of producing basins repeatedly measure losses above bottom-up inventory estimates. GWP choice also matters, since IPCC AR5 gives 28 for fossil methane over 100 years while AR6 gives 29.8, and the 20-year GWP is far higher at roughly 82.

Methane was first isolated by Alessandro Volta between 1776 and 1778, after he collected bubbles rising from marsh sediments in the shallows of Lake Maggiore and found that the gas would burn. Its presence in the atmosphere was not confirmed until the late 1940s, when Marcel Migeotte identified methane absorption bands in the infrared solar spectrum. Systematic monitoring began much later. Ice cores recovered from Greenland and Antarctica established the pre-industrial baseline near 700 ppb, and NOAA began continuous flask sampling of atmospheric methane in the early 1980s, revealing a steep rise, a puzzling near-plateau from about 1999 to 2006, and renewed rapid growth since. The accounting framework used here grew out of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The concept of Global Warming Potential was introduced in the IPCC First Assessment Report in 1990 so that non-CO2 gases could be traded against carbon dioxide in policy, and the sector-by-sector emission factors come from the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, first issued in 1996, substantially rewritten in 2006 and updated by a 2019 refinement. Methane moved from a technical inventory line item to a headline policy target at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, when the Global Methane Pledge committed signatories to cutting collective methane emissions 30 percent below 2020 levels by 2030, largely because the short atmospheric lifetime means cuts deliver measurable temperature benefit within decades rather than centuries.
