Optimal Reading Width Calculator

Line length, called the measure in traditional typography, is expressed in characters per line rather than in physical width because the eye reads glyphs, not millimetres. The working range for continuous prose is 45 to 75 characters including spaces, with about 66 characters treated as the target for single-column text; multi-column newspaper and magazine settings run shorter, commonly 35 to 50. The mechanism is saccadic: a reader fixates roughly every 7 to 9 characters and then must execute a return sweep to the start of the next line. Lines much beyond 75 characters make that return sweep unreliable, producing doubled or skipped lines, while lines under about 40 characters force so many return sweeps that reading rhythm and comprehension both degrade. This calculator converts the character target into a container width using an average advance width of about 0.50 of the font size for serif faces, 0.48 for sans-serif and 0.60 for monospace. At 16px with a serif estimate, 66 characters works out near 528px, which is why content columns in the 600 to 700px range are so common on the web. Two limitations apply. The 0.48 to 0.60 factors are averages over typical English text, so a string dominated by narrow letters such as i, l and t or by wide ones such as m and w will diverge substantially, and languages with different letter distributions or non-Latin scripts diverge further. CSS offers the ch unit as a partial fix, but ch is defined as the advance width of the digit zero, which in most proportional faces is wider than the average letter, so a max-width of 66ch typically yields a slightly generous measure. On narrow phone viewports the 45-character floor is often unreachable and a shorter measure is simply accepted.

Line width was one of the first typographic variables put under experimental control. Miles Tinker and Donald Paterson at the University of Minnesota began publishing controlled reading-speed studies on line width in the late 1920s, testing type set to varying measures and leading, and concluded that very long and very short lines both slowed readers, with the middle range performing best; Tinker summarised the whole program in Legibility of Print in 1963. Their results were also the source of the practical rule that longer measures require more leading to keep the return sweep accurate, which is why the two variables are always specified together. The specific 45-to-75 range entered mainstream design vocabulary through Robert Bringhurst, whose 1992 book The Elements of Typographic Style states that anything from 45 to 75 characters is a satisfactory line length for a single-column page and that 66 characters, counting both letters and spaces, is widely regarded as ideal. The figure had long been implicit in book production, where a typical trade book page of type set at 10 or 11 point across a measure of around 24 picas lands close to that count. When the web made line width a fluid rather than fixed quantity, the guidance was carried over into CSS practice, and the ch unit was standardised in the CSS Values and Units Module Level 3 to let designers express the measure in character widths directly instead of guessing at pixels.
