Can I convert CMYK to Pantone exactly?
No โ CMYK and Pantone are different color systems. Pantone uses pre-mixed inks. Use Pantone's Color Bridge for the closest match.
What is the difference between CMYK and RGB color models?
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is a subtractive color model used in printing, where colors are created by absorbing certain wavelengths of light from white paper. RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is an additive color model used in digital displays, where colors are created by combining light. The CMYK gamut (range of reproducible colors) is smaller than RGB, which is why images often look duller when printed compared to on-screen. Converting RGB designs to CMYK before printing is essential to avoid unexpected color shifts in the final printed output.
Why do printed colors look different from what I see on my screen?
Several factors cause color shifts between screen and print: monitors display colors using RGB light emission while printing uses CMYK ink absorption; monitors can be uncalibrated or set to different color profiles; different paper types absorb ink differently (coated paper produces more vibrant colors than uncoated); and ink coverage limits prevent some very vivid screen colors from being reproduced in print. To minimize surprises, use a calibrated monitor, work in CMYK color mode from the start of your project, request a printed proof before final production, and use Pantone spot colors for brand-critical colors that must match exactly.
When should I use Pantone colors instead of CMYK?
Pantone spot colors are ideal when color consistency is critical, such as for brand logos, corporate identity materials, packaging, and safety markings. Unlike CMYK process printing which mixes four inks in tiny dots that can vary between print runs and printers, Pantone inks are premixed to exact formulas and produce extremely consistent results regardless of where or when you print. Pantone is also the only reliable way to achieve certain colors outside the CMYK gamut, such as bright oranges, vibrant purples, metallic gold and silver, and neon colors. The added cost per color is justified for high-visibility brand materials.
