Shift Length Calculator

Shift length is a modular-arithmetic problem rather than a plain subtraction. Clock times are converted to minutes past midnight, and when the end value is smaller than the start value 1,440 minutes are added, so a 22:00 to 06:00 shift resolves as 480 minutes instead of a negative interval. Gross duration is the full span from clock-in to clock-out; net duration removes unpaid break minutes. Both are reported in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, since 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 and payroll multiplies the decimal form by the hourly rate. Common shift architectures include the 8-hour five-day week, the four-day 10-hour compressed week, the three-day 12-hour rotation used across nursing and continuous-process manufacturing, and 24-hour firefighting tours followed by 48 or 72 hours off. Duration matters for risk as well as for pay: NIOSH and OSHA guidance on extended and unusual shifts notes that error and injury rates climb disproportionately past roughly 8 to 9 hours on task, and that night work compounds the effect through circadian misalignment. This is why night differentials of roughly 1 to 5 dollars per hour are widespread even though no federal law requires them. The night-shift label produced here is a simple heuristic based on start and end hours; actual differential eligibility is set by employer policy or a collective bargaining agreement, and the pay projections assume a fixed five-shift week with no overtime premium.

The eight-hour shift is the residue of a century of agitation. Robert Owen argued in 1817 for eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest at his New Lanark mills, and the slogan carried through the Eight Hour Leagues of the 1860s and the general strike of May 1, 1886. Federal practice moved first in narrow sectors: an eight-hour day for laborers on federal public works dates to an 1868 statute, and the Adamson Act of 1916 imposed one on interstate railroads. Ford Motor Company adopted a five-dollar, eight-hour day in January 1914 and moved to a five-day week in 1926, demonstrating that shorter shifts could be commercially viable at scale. Continuous operation created the rotating shift as a separate object of study. Round-the-clock steel and chemical works popularized three-shift systems in the early twentieth century, and postwar research on sleep and circadian rhythm reframed night work as a health question rather than merely a scheduling one. Investigations following the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 and the Bhopal and Chernobyl disasters drew explicit attention to fatigue among rotating crews. In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified shift work involving circadian disruption as probably carcinogenic to humans. Hours-of-service rules for pilots, commercial truck drivers, and rail crews followed the same logic of capping shift duration directly rather than relying on pay premiums.
