Relationship Anniversary Calculator

Measuring how long two people have been together looks trivial but involves a real ambiguity in calendar arithmetic. A duration can be expressed either as a raw count of elapsed days, which is unambiguous, or as a years-months-days breakdown, which is not, because months have between 28 and 31 days. This calculator uses the standard borrowing method: it subtracts the calendar components, and when the day difference goes negative it borrows the length of the month preceding the end date, then borrows twelve months if the month difference goes negative. That convention is why year-month-day durations should not be added or reversed casually. The milestones the tool surfaces come from two different traditions. Annual anniversaries carry the traditional material symbols: paper at one year, cotton at two, leather at three, wood at five, tin or aluminium at ten, crystal at fifteen, china at twenty, silver at twenty-five, pearl at thirty, ruby at forty, sapphire at forty-five, gold at fifty and diamond at sixty. Day-count milestones such as 100, 365, 500 and 1,000 days come mainly from East Asian dating culture and from online communities, and are computed here by simple addition of days to the start date. One practical caveat concerns 29 February start dates, which recur only in leap years; couples generally observe them on 28 February or 1 March in common years. The other is definitional: partners must agree whether the count begins at the first date or at the day exclusivity was declared, since the tool cannot arbitrate that choice.

The custom of attaching materials to anniversary years appears to have begun in central Europe, where a husband traditionally crowned his wife with a silver wreath after twenty-five years of marriage and a gold wreath after fifty, giving German the terms silberne Hochzeit and goldene Hochzeit. Only those two anniversaries, and later the diamond anniversary, carried widely recognized symbols for most of the nineteenth century. Diamond became attached to the sixtieth anniversary largely through Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, which marked sixty years on the throne. The familiar year-by-year list is much more recent and largely commercial in origin. Emily Post's Etiquette, published in 1922, listed only a handful of anniversary materials. The expanded list assigning a material to each of the first twenty years is commonly credited to the American National Retail Jeweler Association, which published a comprehensive version in 1937; alternative modern lists offering contemporary substitutes such as clocks, china and appliances were promoted by retailers later in the twentieth century. Day-count observance has a separate lineage: the Korean custom of celebrating a baby's hundredth day, baegil, was extended in the twentieth century to romantic couples, and the resulting 100-day milestone spread internationally through Korean popular media and dating applications from the 1990s onward. Digital tracking of relationship duration became commonplace only once personal computers and then smartphones made day-level calendar arithmetic effortless.
