Print Size Calculator

Print size is a unit conversion, not an image process: dividing a pixel dimension by an output resolution in dots per inch returns a physical length. A 4000 by 3000 pixel file sent to a printer at 300 DPI covers 13.3 by 10.0 inches, or 33.9 by 25.4 cm, and the same file at 150 DPI covers twice that linear size while carrying exactly the same information. Nothing is added or removed by changing the DPI number alone; only the sampling density of the ink on paper changes. The 300 DPI convention traces to two constraints that agree. Human visual acuity resolves roughly one arcminute, which at a reading distance of 25 to 30 cm corresponds to about 250 to 300 pixels per inch, and offset lithography commonly screens at 150 lines per inch with a quality factor of 2, again giving 300 pixels per inch. Because acuity is angular, the required resolution falls as viewing distance grows. Practitioners use roughly 300 DPI for magazines, books and fine art prints viewed in the hand, 180 to 240 DPI for gallery prints seen from a metre, 100 to 150 DPI for posters, and 10 to 30 DPI for billboards read from tens of metres. The main caveat is that DPI alone does not guarantee quality: lens sharpness, focus accuracy, sensor noise and JPEG artifacts set a ceiling no output resolution can lift. Upsampling stretches existing samples without recovering detail, so a practical limit is roughly twice the native optimal size, and printer ratings such as 1440 or 2880 DPI describe droplet placement rather than image pixels.

The relationship between image sampling and printed size grew out of halftone reproduction. Frederic Ives demonstrated practical halftone screens in Philadelphia in the 1880s, and by the early twentieth century printers were describing plate quality in lines per inch, a measure of how finely a continuous-tone photograph was broken into dots of varying size. The rule that scanned or digital input should carry about twice the screen ruling in samples per inch, the quality factor, became standard prepress practice and is the direct ancestor of the modern 300 PPI default. Desktop publishing turned that trade practice into a consumer-facing number. Adobe released PostScript in 1985, Apple shipped the 300 DPI LaserWriter the same year, and Aldus PageMaker gave layout artists direct control over image placement, which forced ordinary users to think about pixels per inch for the first time. Early desktop laser printers at exactly 300 DPI reinforced the figure as a mental benchmark. Inkjet photo printers later raised droplet addressability to 1440 and 2880 DPI without changing the image resolution requirement, since multiple droplets combine to render one image pixel. The terminology remains muddled because PPI properly describes image sample density while DPI describes printer marking density, a distinction the International Color Consortium and prepress standards bodies maintain even though everyday usage treats the two as interchangeable.
