Formula
Meat (lbs) = (Adults x 0.5 x MeatTypes) + (Children x 0.25 x MeatTypes)
Each adult requires approximately 0.5 lbs per meat type and each child 0.25 lbs per meat type. Sides are estimated at 0.5 cups per person per dish. Drinks use specified per-person rates for adults and 2 per child.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Family Reunion BBQ for 30 Guests
Problem:Planning a BBQ for 30 guests (70% adults), 5 hours, with 3 meat types, 4 sides, and 3 drinks per person.
Solution:Adults: 21, Children: 9\nMeat: (21 x 1.5) + (9 x 0.75) = 31.5 + 6.75 = 38.25 lbs\nBuns: ceil(21 x 1.5 + 9 x 1) = ceil(40.5) = 41\nSides: 30 x 0.5 x 4 = 60 cups total (15 cups per side)\nDrinks: 21 x 3 + 9 x 2 = 63 + 18 = 81 drinks\nCharcoal: 5 x 5 = 25 lbs
Result:38.25 lbs meat | 41 buns | 60 cups sides | 81 drinks | ~$390 total
Example 2: Small Backyard Cookout for 10

Solution:Meat: 10 x 0.5 x 2 = 10 lbs total (5 lbs per type)\nBuns: ceil(10 x 1.5) = 15\nSides: 10 x 0.5 x 3 = 15 cups total (5 cups per side)\nDrinks: 10 x 4 = 40 drinks\nIce: 10 x 1.5 = 15 lbs\nCharcoal: 3 x 5 = 15 lbs
Result:10 lbs meat | 15 buns | 15 cups sides | 40 drinks | ~$135 total
